Chapter Six

Tessa

The next morning before work, I found myself standing outside a tiny design studio in Greenwich village that had a little garden outside, a tiny courtyard, and a fountain babbling before a bench. I sat and waited, twisting my handbag strap nervously. I hated shopping. Trying on things in private was bad enough. Being dressed by another, I had barely slept at the thought. But what other option did I have? I couldn’t afford any dress that might be suitable to wear to the charity gala and had already decided to go.

I replayed that moment in my mind, where Greyson had told me about how my body was eye-catching, and it affected him. It had been the nicest compliment anyone had ever given me, and I couldn’t refuse him. He wanted the deal, and Ozdemir was a nice man and his charity was more than worthy a cause.

“Hello! Tessa? I’m so sorry I’m late!” A voice called to me. I turned to see a blonde woman, slight but mighty, if the number of coat hangers and boxes were anything to go by, rushing up the small cobbled garden path toward me.

“It’s fine, really. I just arrived,” I lied. The woman reached me and pulled a face.

“Did you really? Or are you just saying that to make me feel better?” she prompted, her brow crinkling with suspicion. I laughed.

“Ok, guilty. But it was a nice place to wait. Beats being early to work anyway,” I said, as I tried to help her with her many burdens.

“I’ll bet. I can’t believe you work with Greyson. He must be such an ogre, I can’t even imagine how you put up with him,” she muttered, as she unlocked the door and shoved it with her hip. “I’m Mia, as I’m sure you realised.”

“He’s not so bad,” I remarked, as I followed her inside. The entire studio was much bigger inside than it had looked from the courtyard. She glanced over at me, her eyes scanning my face with precision, then she smiled.

“Ok, like that, is it? That’s cool. There really is someone for everyone.” She dropped her boxes and dry cleaning bags onto a huge wooden table and turned to me.

“No, I mean, it’s nothing like that. He’s just my boss,” I rushed to tell her. She simply smiled, entirely unconvinced.

“Sure. And Greyson asks for every employee to be dressed for a charity gala,” she said.

“It’s not like that. It’s for work, actually,”

“If you say so. Now, tell me what kind of dresses you like,” Mia said, clapping her hands together and scanning me head to toe.

“I’m not sure. I don’t really have a preference,” I told her. She grinned widely.

“Now, Tessa, that is my very favourite answer. Let’s get trying some pretty sparkling things!”
